The .MD Time Zone
The Republic of Moldova is served by a small number of public NTP servers in the pool zone md.pool.ntp.org. The number of active servers has been declining, and the zone's own page asks for more servers in the country.
Reading the chart at md.pool.ntp.org: the zone has fluctuated between roughly 6 and 14 active servers over 18 years, with a downward trend over the last year. The pool's own page states: "we need more servers in this country."
Why the server count understates the risk
Most servers in the zone are likely ordinary hosts that themselves synchronize from the public pool (Stratum 2 or 3) and relay time obtained from outside Moldova. A zone whose servers all sit several hops from a real reference clock has limited resilience: if international links degrade, accuracy degrades for all of them together, so they fail in a correlated way rather than independently.
What an additional Stratum 1 source provides
ntp1.consolidare-continuum.com is operated by CONSOLIDARE CONTINUUM S.R.L. and participates in the zone as a Stratum 1 source, referenced to GPS with a hardware PPS signal rather than relaying another server:
- It remains accurate when Moldova's international links are degraded: the reference clock is local.
- It gives other servers in the zone a local, low-latency upstream, as one option among others.
- Independent, hardware-referenced sources appear uncommon in this zone.
- It is operated as a permanent service: GPS+PPS locked, persistent across reboots, firewalled and monitored.
This is one addition, not a complete remedy; the zone needs more independent sources.
